Is 'al rato' the king of vague excuses?

Okay, I'm still getting the hang of Mexican Spanish. 'Al rato' is a word I hear a lot. It seems to mean 'later' but also sometimes 'never'. Is it just me or is this a super flexible phrase? What's your take on it?
