Playa del Carmen vs. other coastal cities?

I'm thinking about where to live long-term. Playa del Carmen is great but very touristy. Are there other coastal cities with a more local feel? Maybe less crowded too? I'm curious about how they compare.

¡Hola! Entiendo perfecto lo que buscas. Playa es linda, sí, pero tiene su onda muy turística. Si buscas algo más local y tranquilo en la costa, deberías checar Bacalar. Es diferente, más de laguna, pero con un ambiente más relajado.

  Oh, Bacalar! Jaja, yes, the lagoon is unreal. It has this seven-shade blue thing going on. Totally less crowded than PDC for sure. Worth checking out if you want chill vibes.
