¿Por qué tantas calaveras en Día de Muertos?

Hey everyone! I'm loving Mexico City so far. Día de Muertos is coming up and I'm seeing skulls everywhere. They look cool, but why so many? Is it just decoration or is there more meaning? Curious to learn from you all.
